Cougar swimmers set personal records in Hawaii

The UH swimming team returned to action Friday as they participated in the Duke Kahanamoku Sprint Meet in Honolulu, Hawaii. The meet was the first for the Cougars since the Arkansas Invitational on Dec. 1.
Ten Cougars recorded new personal bests at the meet.

The Cougar swimming and diving corps will next compete Jan. 19 against the Rice Owls at the UH Natatorium.
Junior Falon Hopkins led the way for Houston with two top-10 finishes. Hopkins finished fourth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 26.33 seconds. Hopkins, competing in the 50-yard backstroke for the first time this year, set a season best time for the Cougars of 29.09 seconds.
Freshman Kristin Bay set a new personal record of 25.23 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. That time was good enough to earn her a 10th place finish in the event. Sophomore Lucile Turpin nearly broke the minute mark in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 1:00.19 was a personal best and gave her an eighth-place finish.
Kristen Douglass, Brittney Dye, Elissa Nelson, Jenni Pease, Shawna Rathburn, Laura Starr and Meagan Wein also set new personal bests in their events, though none were fast enough to place.
The Cougars' next event is Jan. 19 when crosstown rival Rice visits
the UH Natatorium. Admission is free and the meets are open to the public.
The Cougars will hold three dual meets this month.
