Faculty Senate elects news
president
After a close run against Technology Sen. Katy Greenwood, Natural Sciences
and Mathematics Sen. Giles Auchmuty was elected the next president of the
Faculty Senate during its meeting Wednesday.
'Weight' excels
despite heavy story
With The Weight of Water, Kathryn Bigelow excels in comparing
a sexually repressed woman's rage to that of a jailed homophobe who's just
been force-fed a bottle of Viagra. The problem for Bigelow isn't the complex
plot, but it's the thought of the film being too ambitious by Hollywood's
standards.
J. Lo's 'Maid' looks
to clean up a box office
In Maid in Manhattan, one of the entertainment industry's most
appealing names, Jennifer Lopez, is paired with one of the screen's finest
actors, Ralph Fiennes. Wang, who directed The Joy Luck Club, and
John Hughes, who penned the 1980s hits The Breakfast Club and Pretty
in Pink, also lend their talents to the film.
Lineup survives while
Guns 'N' Roses loads up
Barring a last-minute cancellation, Guns 'N' Roses is set to grace
the Compaq Center's stage Tuesday, and local lineups haven't seemed too
appealing. But the music scene won't give up. This weekend's lineup offers
concert-goers everything from the renowned Battle of the Bands to even
Erykah Badu's little sister, Nayrok.
Breaking Benjamin knocks

With a debut album hitting the stores, and radio play many bands could
only dream of, Breaking Benjamin is breaking into the scene with a chugging
ferocity characteristic of its energy-filled music.

Simonson: Corporate-owned
media in no way
promotes leftist coverage
OK, listen up, everybody. Ready? Good, because I'm only going to say
this once: I am damn sick and tired of hearing about the "liberal media."
Got it?
Caster: Give Sen. Lott
a break
U.S. Senator and soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss)
is in big trouble. Last week, at Sen. Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party,
it seems he made a comment that has angered a few Democrats -- well, OK,
all Democrats, and a few Republicans. The comment was made regarding Thurmond's
presidential run in 1948. Lott said that if Thurmond had beaten Harry S.
Truman that year, the country would have been a lot better off.

Briles goes
back to high school, hires new coaches
Just seven days into his new job, UH head coach Art Briles has already
started to build his staff -- and he's looking to familiar faces to do
it. On Sunday, he hired former UH wideout Jason Phillips as the wide receivers
coach. This week, he added high school coach Randy Clements and may be
close to hiring Phillip Montgomery.
Bowls show little respect
for tradition
Every year about this time of the season this writer is disgusted by
what he sees. There still isn't a Division I-A football playoff system
(Div. I-A football is the only NCAA sport that doesn't have a playoff system).
