Volume 6, Issue 3 University of Houston Lady Cougars poised to win final
game
By Christian Schmidt
The Lady Cougars just have to take care of business until Conference USA play begins. Houston (9-2) has roared out of the gates with one of the best starts in school history and has a chance to finish the non-conference schedule with a 10-2 record. Standing in the way of win No. 10 is Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a team the Lady Cougars beat 66-43 last season. Houston takes on the Lady Islanders at 3 p.m. today in Hofheinz Pavilion.
Junior forward Sancho Lyttle is always a threat for a double double. Lyttle averages 17.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Pin Lim/Breaking News The Lady Cougars' only losses this year were to ranked teams -- a 65-52 loss to No. 12 Georgia on the road and a 66-63 defeat at the hands of No. 10 Purdue. Houston did record important wins against Texas A&M and Alabama, both road victories against tough opponents. Looming beyond the A&M-Corpus Christi game is a tough four-game road trip to open the C-USA season (a non-conference game against Wichita State is also tucked in that trip). The conference season may provide the biggest test for the Lady Cougars this season, and Houston will need to win the conference in order to be assured of a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Houston continues to receive votes in the coaches' poll, though it has not yet cracked the top 25 this season. That could change if the Lady Cougars play as well in C-USA as they have in their non-conference games. Senior guard Chandi Jones is once again leading the way for the Lady Cougars, averaging a team-high 20.6 points per game to go along with 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists, both in second place on the team. Joining Jones atop the statistics leaderboard is junior forward Sancho Lyttle. In her first season with the team, she is second on the team in scoring with 17.4 points per game, and leads Houston with 9.1 rebounds per game. Send comments to dcsports@mail.uh.edu. |
