Hawaii Bowl Update
Cougars stranded in island
paradise
The stars for Houston are usually aligned. Rex Hadnot,
Brandon Middleton, Joe Clay and Kevin Kolb are the names most mentioned
when highlighting the Cougars.
But some new stars twinkled for Houston on Christmas
Day. see game story
Laura Moreno/Breaking News
Sophomore Vincent Marshall's 81-yard
touchdown sprint in the fourth quarter had Hawaii gasping for air, but
the Warriors outlasted the Cougars in Thursday's Hawaii Bowl and walked
away with a 54-48 victory.
Chest-thumping leads to post-game
brawl, casts negative light on bowl
Melee Kalikimaka!
Moments after losing to Hawaii 54-48 in the Hawaii
Bowl on Thursday, a nasty brawl between the two teams broke out, creating
a black cloud over an otherwise clear night.
Beauty fades so easily.
UH Health Center runs out
of flu vaccine
The University Health Center reported it has run
out of influenza vaccinations, part of a large national demand for the
immunization that has led to shortages across the country.
Blaffer director honored
for artistic direction
When she was growing up, Terrie Sultan thought it
was natural to dabble in paint, be the first to run to center stage or
even lose her breath at the sight of people admiring a Pablo Picasso painting.
It's only fitting that she admires -- and helps others admire -- works
of art for a living. And, as far as France is concerned, she does it well.
Water-pipe replacement will
disrupt UH traffic
Partial street closures will affect traffic around
the University for the next few months as the city replaces water mains
in the area.
Love it or hate it, fruitcake
holds nutritional middle ground
Fruitcake lovers can revel in the fact that the
traditional holiday dessert is not fattening -- but it's also not nutritional,
a UH dietician said.
Tall tales tell
the truth in 'Big Fish'
A story goes a long way if it's told in a memorable
way. The driving force behind a story is not necessarily the plot or characters'
plight, but the way the events unfold and are brought to life by the narrator
-- the storyteller.
Quality is clear in 'Sand
and Fog'
Set in modern-day San Francisco, House of Sand
and Fog tells the story of a woman evicted from her inherited home
and the family that buys the house. Based on the 400-page novel of the
same title by Andre Dubus III, the movie takes its viewers through the
lives of characters who seem to be thinking about and going through more
than what they make obvious.
'Mona Lisa' doesn't smile
Mona Lisa Smile is a bearable movie about
young women's struggles, but it would have been worth recommending if its
characters would've had a chance to breathe. Instead, director Mike Newell's
work is a rushed journey through a handful of schoolgirls' lives, leaving
viewers with too many questions about the story.
No Doubt's 'Singles'
rocks
Somewhere in Southern California, former No Doubt
member Eric Stefani is probably feeling a little flustered. It's been almost
17 years since the ska group he founded played its first show on Dec. 31,
1986, and in 1995 his clever opening guitar hook to "Just a Girl" launched
the band into a staple of mainstream pop music -- without him.

Remember the
meaning of the season
Merry Christmas! Terrible traffic and long lines
have subsided, for the most part. The stress is all but over, but after
that all that remains is family, food and fun. We can relax and enjoy the
wonders of consumerism, but even while basking in the warm glow of conspicuous
consumption, the holidays harbor a darker part of humanity's nature.
Nation carries on despite
high terror alert
The Department of Homeland Security raised the level
on its terror advisory system Sunday from an "elevated" yellow bar to "high,"
denoted by an orange color, as Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said
he had information regarding possible imminent attacks on the United States.
Staff Editorial: Hawaii,
here we come
Hawaii is a
sad little state
Ashton Kutcher could not be found snickering behind
the scenes. He wasn't born yet. MTV couldn't run promo after promo after
promo about it, because the cable channel had not been born yet. A rising
starlet wasn't hiding from tabloid photographers and television cameras.
But it was an episode of Punk'd nonetheless. Albeit in 1959.
Briles, Coogs look to
complete
turnaround Christmas
Day
During his first season as Cougar head football
coach, Art Briles has been called just about everything. Genius. Savior.
Folksy. But he has never been called an alchemist.
Men's team tries to continue
home cooking,
Lady Coogs get a break
After a slow start to the 2003-2004 season, the
UH men's basketball team has clawed back to even its overall record at
3-3.
