Pair of wins puts Lady Cougars back in stride

First with what head coach Joe Curl called an "ugly win" against Tulane on Saturday and then with a 64-47 victory against Southern Miss on Sunday, the Lady Cougars made an impressive Conference USA debut while killing a three-game losing streak.
UH led Sunday’s match throughout, holding Southern Miss to 15 points in the first half, compared to the Lady Cougars’ 36, but it was a different story against Tulane.
The Green Wave, with senior forward Lakethia Hamption’s 24-point performance, battled until the final seconds of a game in which the lead changed 18 times. The game was decided with a jumper by freshman guard Jasmine Moore with 13 seconds left; Tulane missed its chance to top the Lady Cougars with one second left.
In the Saturday match, the Lady Cougars were led by senior center Kiki Harris with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and senior forward Sancho Lyttle, with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Things were easier on Sunday, though the Golden Eagles did manage to rally in the second half, matching 32 points to UH’s 28. Against Southern Miss, the Lady Cougars shot better than 43 percent from the field and were led by Lyttle with 16 points, and by Moore and Harris, with 11 points apiece.
The two wins end a nine-game road trip that was marked by three rocky
losses during the winter break. The Lady Cougars next face Alabama-Birmingham
at 7 p.m. Friday in Hofheinz Pavilion.
