Reorganization helps UH scientists meet new goals

The Texas Center for Superconductivity at UH, responsible for research and development of high temperature superconductors, announced new leadership roles for University professors.
UH President Jay Gogue appointed Allan Jacobson TcSUH director. Jacobson is a chemistry professor and the founding director of the UH Center for Materials Chemistry.
Paul Chu, a physics professor, will serve as TcSUH executive director and chief science adviser without salary. Chu leads the high temperature superconductivity and advanced materials research programs at UH while serving as president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Physics professor Wei-Kan Chu, a pioneer in ion beam research, will serve as research director for TcSUH.
The reorganization should help University scientists expand their efforts in superconductivity, energy and nano materials research.
"We have strengthened our primary commitment to fundamental and applied superconductivity research while also taking advantage of the expertise and synergy between our HTS researchers and strong UH research programs in nanomaterials and energy materials," Jacobson said in a release.
TcSUH programs include discovery, understanding and applications of materials that become superconductors at new record high temperatures, production of pure oxygen for medical and industrial applications and development of nano materials and technologies among others.
The center also conducts outreach programs to support
science education in elementary , secondary, undergraduate and graduate
schools.
