Dean of Cullen College of Engineering to retire as administrator

Raymond W. Flumerfelt, dean of the Cullen College of Engineering, recently announced he will retire from his administrative position as of Fall 2007.
Flumerfelt will remain at UH as a faculty member but said after nine years as dean, he’s making way for someone to a fresh outlook to continue building the college.
“It’s time for someone else to lead our college to its next level of excellence,” he said in a release.
As a faculty member, Flumerfelt said he plans to build up UH’s biomedical and energy programs and continue to assist in campaigns to raise funds for a new engineering complex.
UH provost Donald Foss said he hopes Flumerfelt’s replacement will be found by the beginning of the fall semester.
“In terms of the future, we are committed to finding a leader who can capitalize on these successes and move the college into the ranks of the very best engineering colleges in the country,” he said in a release.
Flumerfelt has served on the faculty at UH, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Tulsa. He has also held several positions at Texas A&M University, including head of its Department of Chemical Engineering and deputy vice chancellor and associate dean of engineering.
Of his time as dean of the Cullen College of Engineering, Foss said Flumerfelt has made a positive impact.
“Dean Flumerfelt has provided excellent leadership for the Cullen College of Engineering throughout these nine years, and the faculty, students, staff and alumni of the college and the University of Houston appreciate his many contributions,” Foss said.
