A search committee has been formed to select a new dean for the Graduate School of Social Work.

The current dean, Karen Holmes, has served as interim dean for two years. She previously served as acting dean after Karen Haynes left the position to serve as dean for UH-Victoria. Holmes is one among dozens of applicants now seeking the position.

Dean of the Honors College and chairman of the search committee Ted Estess said the committee is made of faculty members, student representatives and community representatives.

The committee has been assigned to select approximately six candidates for an on-campus interview to fill the position. It will then meet with the candidates chosen and gather information to recommend at least three candidates to the provost. 

The provost will make the final decision as to who will fill the position. The selection of the new dean is expected to be completed by next summer or fall.

According to Estess, the committee is looking for someone who can give good, consistent leadership and understands the opportunities in and challenges of social work today. 

"We are looking for someone who will direct goals and (is) committed to work with various groups in the city," he said.

Jean Latting, social work professor and committee member, said they are looking for someone with strong leadership skills who will guide the school of social work toward accomplishing its goals.
