Campus OK for Y2K
Preparation exterminates much-hyped computer bug

As the UH campus re-opened Monday on the first business day of the new year, concerns over how the University's computers would react to any Y2K glitches proved unfounded.
"So far today, we've received zero calls on desktop systems," Steven Green, Year 2000 Project office manager, said Monday afternoon.
Members of the project, plumbers and electricians were on campus New Year's Eve and remained into the morning of Jan. 1 to monitor any potential Y2K problems. Eighteen UH police officers were also on campus scouring the buildings for any problems.
Once it became clear that the campus was safe, officials began to leave -- some remaining until late Saturday morning.
Although UH experienced no Y2K-related problems, Green said the eight years spent bringing the University into compliance was not a wasted effort. Making UH Y2K compliant involved not only campus personnel, but officials at all levels of government.
Green said the project opened doors and got people working with different groups they may never have realized existed.
He said the effort gave UH the chance to upgrade outdated computer systems
as well.
