In their own words: SA candidates state platforms

The following are candidate profiles submitted by candidates in the Students' Association elections, which end today.

Patrick L. Lalor

Coalition Party candidate for

SA president

The current pervasive attitude of student vs. student has produced an environment which allows the university administration to raise student fees with virtually no student input.

As your president, I will act as a compelling force to unite all student factions and, in turn, present a united front to the campus administration.

The key element which I bring to the equation is proven sustained leadership which has been absent from the SA Senate for a long time.

Finally, I will open up SA to the student body at large to include more of the everyday students, instead of a select few.

Andrew M. Becker

Coalition Party candidate for At-Large position 1

Having served as SA senator and Residence Halls Association president for the last year, I have many successful experiences getting constituents' problems solved by working cooperatively with the university administration.

As a candidate, I am confident that I will be able to repeat my past successes in representing the student body.

Unlike some of the current senators, I have always fought for greater student involvement in the decision-making process.

I, along with the other candidates of the Coalition Party, will never forget that the ultimate goal of student government is to ensure that all students have a voice.

Andrea Rachiele

Cougar Party candidate for HFAC position 2

I've got very specific goals, and I'm determined to achieve them.

As a senator in the 1994-95 senate, I sponsored a bill to create a car-pool system. Unfortunately, apathy with SA caused the bill to never be implemented.

So, first, I want to unify and motivate SA into actually implementing what is passed.

Second, I want to reinstitute a car-pool plan accompanied by a plan to increase shuttle services from outer lots. I want to show students that SA really wants to get things done for them.

Third, I would like to see more copiers available around campus, particularly around Agnes Arnoled Hall and PGH.

And that is just the beginning. If elected, I know I can accomplish a lot because I am responsible, active, caring and hard-working. I have initiative and enthusiasm. I believe in excellence in leadership.

Nathan Fischer

AirWigz Party candidate for

At-Large Senate position 3

I abhor platforms and the subsequent stages they enact. But due to the prodding of my campaign manager, against my better judgment, and much to my chagrin, I offer the following:

I have many convictions and hold a few beliefs dear to my heart. I firmly believe in the virtues of niceness, frugality, honesty and all that jazz. I also believe the above is irrelevant to my platform.

Politics is full of meaningless words, as are we all. Beliefs, convictions and agendas only serve to hinder fulfillment of a representative's duty.

Do not wonder about my stance on any particular issue; simply ask yourselves. If given the privilege of election, my job will be to listen to your convictions, beliefs, etc., and to temporarily make them my own.

I realize most students willing to vote for such a platform will forget to vote, but I hope for their sakes they remember.
