Daily Cougar StaffThink there is nothing good to do on campus? The Student Program Board would like to prove you wrong.
Starting Saturday night, you can watch "The WC." No, it's not a new network, it's a Weekly Concert that will run every Saturday night from now until the end of the semester.
This week's concert will feature the group Half Dead Organization.
"They're pretty good," said Broderick Dockery, chairman of the SPB's Concert Committee. He said the group will probably go triple platinum. The Grimple Twins and Lima Sugar will also perform.
The show will kickoff at 6 p.m. at the UH outdoor pool site, located between the Moody Towers and the Quadrangle. In addition to the concert, students will be able to enjoy swimming, volleyball and a barbecue provided by Harlon's Barbecue.
The idea for the series originated with a dream, Dockery said. A graduating senior, he feels all seniors should have the chance to go out with a bang. This was one way he thought he could give back to the student body.
Dockery also said the series would be meeting the SPB's mission to provide educational and entertainment activities for students.
The Concert Committee is also coordinating an after-party event at Jamaica, Jamaica - The Club, located at 2631 Richmond at Kirby.
Since UH policies limit capacity at outdoor events to 300 people, Dockery said he hopes those turned away will attend the after -party. Jamaica, Jamaica will be offering 99 cent margaritas to students of age.
"There is no alcohol permitted at the pool facility," Dockery said. "While we (SPB) do not condone alcoholic consumption, we are aware that this activity does occur. Thus, any student wishing to drink should do so at the designated WC after-spot, Jamaica, Jamaica - The Club."
Both the pool event and the after party are free to all students with a valid student ID card.
The SPB expects a large turn- out, especially with promotions running on local radio station 97.9 KBXX, The Box.
Students are also looking forward to the event.
"Wow! That's cool! Now I have something to do on the weekends!" said Edmond Vahedi, a freshman electrical engineering student.
Will the WC be a hit? Tune in Saturday night and find out. Rain location is the Towers Breezeway.
