United States Olympian and former Houston Cougars sprinter/long jumper Carl Lewis tuned up for the Olympic trials in a triangle dual between Houston, Rice and Harvard.
Lewis ran away with 100 meters, with a time of 10.27 seconds, in a field featuring eight to 10 Cougars sprinters and sprinters from Rice and Harvard, at Saturday's Rice Meeting of the Mind triangular dual at Rice Track Stadium.
The meet was an opportunity for the Houston men's Track and Field outdoor team to work on its technique, said Tom Tellez, Houston's head coach.
"You have got to mix it up sometimes in order to get the best," Lewis said of the coach's decision to run a large number of sprinters. "If you vary what you do, it makes what you do specifically, better."
Lewis, who is a volunteer coach for the Cougars, said the team is coming along and is very talented, which he said is making life a little easier for Tellez.
"(The meet) was pretty low key, but I thought some of the kids did well," Tellez said about the meet.
There was some improvement, especially by Manuel Hudson, who ran the 100 and 200 meters, Tellez said.
"In some cases, they ran better time, and in some cases they improved their technique," Tellez said.
