Cougars baseball team loses 2-of-3 to Oklahoma

The Houston Cougars baseball team won only one of three games in a series against Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., this weekend, despite outscoring the Sooners 21-17 for the series.

Houston lost an early five-run lead in losing a 7-6 decision to the Sooners Friday.

Oklahoma starting pitcher Joe Victery picked up the victory despite giving up four first-inning runs.

Cougar outfielder Karl Ryden had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Outfielder Mike Medrano had four hits, but only scored one run.

Houston bounced back for a 9-3 win over Oklahoma on Saturday behind a 21-hit, three-home run team performance.

Cougars pitcher Jason Schreiber picked up the win and helped his own cause with four hits.

Houston third baseman Joaquin Martinez had four hits, three RBIs, two runs scored and a homer.

In Saturday's 7-6 loss, the Cougars went into the bottom of the eighth inning clinging to a one-run lead, which the Sooners were able to overcome for the win.

Houston pitcher Mike Manabeck was credited with the loss after entering the game in the eighth inning and not being able to hold the lead, and Cougars coach Rayner Noble was ejected from the game.

Houston fell to 17-15 after losing seven of their last 11 games; Oklahoma went to 20-10.
