Darius Pemberton finished first in both the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump. The Cougars men's track team finished second behind the University of Los Angeles in a field of four at the UCLA dual meet Saturday at Drake Stadium, Los Angeles.
Pemberton ran the hurdles in 13.8 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than second-place Avery Anderson of UCLA.
Pemberton's leap of 26 feet, 1 1/2 inches paced the long jumpers.
Cougars long jumpers Sheddric Fields (25' 5 1/2") finished second and Peter Haggstrom (23' 6 3/4") finished third.
Fields also finished second (10.66) in the 100 meters.
The Cougars 4x100 meter relay team of Pemberton and Fields, as well as Henrik Olasson and Eric Frompog, finished second (40.01).
Also among the first-place finishers for UH was Vincenzo Cox in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.75 seconds and Dennis Darling in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.05 seconds.
The women's track team only finished third in the meet, but it had several first-place winners.
UCLA placed first overall for the women, more than doubling everyone else's points.
Cougar Akua Ollison finished first in the long jump with a leap of 19' even.
Houston's Tracy Smith trounced her opponents in the javelin with a 112'1" inch hurl, 24'2" better than second-place California State's Monica Tobin.
Cougars hurdler Lisa-May Duffus finished first in the 400- meter hurdles in 1:00.06.
Middle-distance runner Sherril Baker finished second in the 800 meters (2:11.19).
Next, both track teams will compete at the Mt. SAC Relays April 20-21, in Walnut, Calif.
