Daily Cougar Senior Staff"What goes up must come down" sounds great when you're talking about physics, but it doesn't sound all that great when you're talking about construction.
Workers began removing the newly constructed second-floor slab and pillars of the John and Rebecca Moores School of Music Building Monday because of poor concrete, said James Berry, associate vice chancellor for Facilities Planning and Construction.
The concrete in the second-floor slab did not meet project specifications, Berry said. The concrete contractor, Pioneer Concrete, will pay for the removal and rebuilding.
The work will be done by the project manager, Hines Construction, and contractor Morganti Texas.
"We're not sure how much more time this will take," Berry said. He added that the project is split into different areas, and workers will be moved from where they are currently working to the other areas until the second floor is repaired.
The second-floor slab had no fly ash, a concrete strengthener required by the contract with UH.
Berry said he still expects the $21.4 million job to be finished by the end of April 1997.
