The Houston Cougars men's track team knocked off Rice and Harvard in the Meeting of the Minds Saturday at Rice.
Houston won seven events at the meet, led by Cougars sophomore weight thrower John Davis. Davis won the shot put with a throw of 60 feet, 5 3/4 inches, a new meet record, and took first in the discus with a throw of 55.86 feet.
Davis also tried his hand at the javelin, not one of his usual events, and threw for 186-3, tops among collegians.
Houston swept all the short-distance races. Houston senior sprinter Henrik Olausson won the 100-meter dash in 10.9 seconds. Senior Isaac Bell took first in the 200 in 21.59. Cougars freshman Karim Alston beat all comers in the 400 with a time of 48.19. And Mike McAndrews won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 1.19 seconds.
Another win for UH came in the pole vault, when Cougars junior vaulter Mike Quintanilla vaulted 16-8 3/4.
The UH women's track team competed in the Rice Bayou Classic Friday and Saturday at Rice and finished third out of four teams.
Cougars senior distance runner Christy Bench won the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:38.5.
