Sybil Todd, deputy chancellor and vice president for institutional advancement, was named by University of Houston President Arthur Smith as head of the search committee for a new athletics director.

Todd will chair the national search to fill the position formerly held by Bill Carr.

Todd came to UH with Smith from the University of Utah, where she served as vice president of student affairs.

In a letter to Houston Athletics Foundation supporters, Smith said Todd was involved extensively in athletics matters at the University of Utah, as well as at the University of Virginia, where she worked for 23 years.

Bill McGillis, former associate athletics director, will serve as interim athletics director until the position is filled permanently.

Smith also stated in the letter that he wants the committee to find the best qualified individual who is able to manage a major NCAA Division I program and fits well with the Houston and UH communities.

Smith has requested no fewer than three, but prefers five, nominations for the position by early summer. He hopes to have the new athletic director named by July and on campus by fall.

Nominations are currently being taken by the search committee and may be directed to Todd.
