Two guards have signed with the Houston Cougars basketball team for the spring signing period. UH coach Alvin Brooks announced 6-foot-1-inch Treva Crosby of South Lafourche High School in Galliano, La., and 6-foot-5-inch Chad Hendrick, a product of Houston's Madison High School, will join the team.

Crosby led South Lafourche to the state final four with a 28-5 record last season. He averaged 16.6 points and 4.3 assists per game, while shooting 50.6 percent from the floor, 38 percent behind the three-point line and 85 percent from the free-throw line as a senior.

Hendrick averaged 19.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals as a senior at Madison. He earned a spot on the second team all-state team chosen by The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and was the District 17-5A MVP.

Crosby and Hendrick have met the NCAA entrance requirement, and Crosby has a 3.4 grade point average overall.

That gives the Cougars eight newcomers for the 1997-98 season.

Houston had two signees in the fall signing period, 6-foot-7-inch forward Trey Austin from Houston's Westbury High School and 6-foot-6-inch forward Charles Fordjour of Clear Creek.

UH also re-signed Kenny Younger, a 6-foot-9-inch forward from Minot High School in North Dakota. Younger signed with Houston last year but did not qualify academically. He is attending UH-Downtown this semester.

Three transfers joined the team in January: 6-foot-10-inch, 230-pound center Ben Echols from Centenary; 6-foot-8-inch, 220-pound forward William Stringfellow of Wake Forest; and 6-foot-7-inch, 250-pound forward Early Smith from Mississippi State.

The three sat out the spring season and must sit out for the fall, according to NCAA rules for transferring, but should be ready in time for Conference USA play next year if they are healthy and eligible.
