The University of Houston has a 5-stroke lead after the first round of the Conference USA Men's Golf Championships Tuesday at the Columbia Lakes Resort & Country Club in West Columbia.
Led by 1-under-par rounds of 71 by Cougars Jeff Burns and Mike Brennan, Houston shot a 293, five ahead of defending C-USA champs UNC Charlotte, who shot a 298, and nine ahead of Alabama-Birmingham, who shot a 302 opening-round score.
Four of the five Cougars finished with scores in the top 20.
The second round begins at 9 a.m. today.
