More bricks were laid on the foundation of the Students' Association at Wednesday night's meeting, as the speaker of the Senate and speaker pro tempore were elected to their positions.
Former Sen. Nathan Wittman was unanimously declared speaker, since he was the only candidate for the position. Wittman said one task he hopes to accomplish is improving meeting attendance.
"It's pretty much a lack of communication right now because of the transition (between administrations)," Wittman said. "With improved communication, we'll begin to raise (attendance)."
Vice President and outgoing Speaker Jon Erickson emphasized the importance of the position, saying, "They're the driving force in what (senators) will accomplish."
Humanities, Fine Arts and Communication Sen. Calvin Pollard II was elected pro-tempore over Engineering Sen. Kique Parilla-Rojas.
"The thing that makes the Senate flow as smoothly as it does is education of legislation and parliamentary procedure," Pollard said. "I'm highly in favor of teaching everything that needs to go on with Senate."
President Natalie Merritt announced the deadline had passed for turning in applications for director of public relations, and one application was received.
Erickson revealed Honors College Sen. Brenda Johnson as the sole candidate. Johnson previously served as assistant director of public relations.
"We have found an exceptionally qualified candidate (in Brenda)," Erickson said.
Erickson also said there are three applications in for the director of finance position, which will be vacated by Lee Doherty when she graduates this semester.
Merritt said applications for director of finance will be accepted until 5 p.m. Wednesday in the SA office.
