UH men's track takes third in Austin

Cougars sophomore distance runner Ron Pascucci posted his best time of the year to win the 1500-meter run, and sophomore thrower John Davis won the discus and the shot put as the Houston Cougars track and field team finished third out of five teams at the Texas Five-Way meet Saturday in Austin.

Pascucci had a time of 3 minutes, 50.1 seconds to win the 1500.

Davis had a toss of 57 feet, 9 1/2 inches to win the shot and a throw of 185 feet, 1 inch to win the discus.

Chris Jones (400-meter dash), Vance Reyes (3,000-meter run), Darius Pemberton (110-meter hurdles), Omar Leon (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Nathan Labus (pole vault) all finished second in their respective events for Houston.

The Texas Longhorns finished first with 85.5 points and the Texas A&M Aggies finished second with 72 points. The Cougars finished with 57 points. Oklahoma (35 points) placed fourth and Rice was fifth (17 points).

Houston freshman Michelle Hickman won the triple jump with a leap of 40-4 3/4, but no other Lady Cougars won their events and UH finished fifth.

Vanessa Zavaletta (hammer throw) and Jenny Adams (long jump) finished second and third in their events, respectively.
