Wave turns tide on UH, winning two of three with strong pitching

The Houston Cougars baseball team lost its first conference series of the season this weekend, losing two of three against the Tulane Green Wave in New Orleans.

Cougar pitcher Shane Nance lost a 2-1 pitcher's duel Friday, giving up only two earned runs in eight innings with 10 strikeouts, but Tulane pitcher Jason Navarro gave up only one run while pitching a complete game.

The teams switched gears Saturday, with the Cougars (31-17 overall, 15-6 Conference USA) winning 12-11 in a 10-inning slugfest.

Tulane (32-15, 14-6) scored six runs in the first inning and had a two-run lead going into the top of the ninth before UH tied the score to send it into extra innings.

Center fielder Goefrey Tomlinson led the Cougars with 3-for-6 hitting and four RBIs.

It was back to a low scoring affair Sunday with Tulane pulling out a 4-2 win.

Tulane pitcher Jared Berkowitz gave up two runs in seven innings. reliever Todd Ardoin pitched two shutout innings to collect his third save.
