To the editor:
Last week, over 30 students, faculty, staff and alumni took a day off of work and away from studies to help the University of Houston in Austin. They boarded a bus at 8 a.m. and came to Austin to spend the afternoon encouraging the support of more than 100 state representatives and senators and their staffs.
When they arrived in Austin, they were joined by some of their colleagues from UH-Downtown and UH-Clear Lake.
After walking the halls of the Capitol and stopping in offices with a thank-you and a reminder of the important role that UH plays in Texas and in the region, the delegation joined the UH Alumni Capitol of Texas Club in a reception to welcome Chancellor Smith and his wife June to Texas. The were also greeted by a number of UH legislative interns.
Their long day ended sometime after 10 p.m. when they returned to campus and headed home.
The reports from the Capitol on the impact of the UH visits are enthusiastic. The members of the legislature and the staff and alumni continue to play an important part in our legislative communications and outreach. The messages they carry are messages that the members of the legislature want to and need to hear.
A special note of appreciation to Angi Patton, Natalie Merritt, Steve Hall and Helen Hall for coordinating the volunteers' efforts. We look forward to continuing to work with the university community and the legislature to meet the future needs of UH and the UH System.
