Silent victims

As any number of political pundits can (but never would) tell you, it's always easier to go after targets who can't fight back.

This is why conservative mouthpieces like Rush Limbaugh rail about tax money spent to feed and house the poor, while remaining silent about the exponentially larger amount spent to provide subsidies to multibillion-dollar corporations.

Parents who take their children to the Loving Arms Foundation, the only Houston-area daycare specializing in the care of HIV/AIDS-infected children and children with infected parents or siblings, are learning that hard fact of life. Harris County has apparently decided that AIDS monies received from the federal government can be spent better in other areas than on the care of these children. The foundation, it seems, failed to provide the proper auditing paperwork.

So who does the county decide to punish? Do officials target the person whose job it is to ensure audits are completed in a timely manner? Do they castigate the head of the foundation?

No. They cut off funding to the foundation, punishing not only whichever negligent worker caused this situation, but innocent children who cannot receive care of that level anywhere else.

Shame on them.
