The University of Houston Student Publications Committee unanimously elected Lana Khawaja as the 1997-98 editor in chief of the Houstonian yearbook Friday.
A junior journalism major, Khawaja served this past year as organizations editor of the Houstonian. She previously served as photo editor and staff writer for the MacArthur High School MacArtair.
Khawaja said one benefit she will have over previous editors is a majority of section editors returning from this year's staff.
"It's easier to train them to be better at what they're already doing," she said.
Khawaja also said she plans to change the structure of the yearbook to fall and spring sections, as opposed to the previous structure of having sections based upon different parts of the campus, such as athletics and residence halls.
She also said she will talk to journalism classes to recruit staff members and has already talked to yearbook advisers from area high schools to recruit incoming freshmen.
Khawaja will assume her duties as Houstonian editor at the beginning of the fall semester.
