June 2 in history: Velveeta cheese invented, 1928; Queen Elizabeth II crowned, 1953; sewing machine invented, 1857; Barnum's circus begins touring the United States, 1835. June 2 is the birthday of talented child actors Jerry Mathers (the Beaver, 1948) and Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster, 1953), plus composer Edward Elgar (1857), columnist Hedda Hopper (1890) and Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller (1904). Be sure to celebrate in an appropriate fashion.

An evening of music: The Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival opens its Distinguished Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. in the Dudley Recital Hall, Fine Arts Building. The program features the Symphonic Brass Quintet plus a sextet including pianist and UH alumnus Richard Dowling. Admission is $5 for students, $10 general admission; tickets will be available at the door. For information, call 743-3009.

When you wish upon a star: The Children's Theatre Festival will perform The Star Stealer, a play by Sidney Berger, at the Wortham Theatre on the UH campus today through Thursday, June 19. Shows are Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admission is $4.50 for children and $5.50 for adults. For information, call the festival box office at 743-2929.

At the movies: The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents the Houston premiere of Ulysses' Gaze, a modern rendition of Homer's Odyssey starring Harvey Keitel, at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday. Shows are held in the MFA's Brown Auditorium, 1001 Bissonnet between Montrose and Main. Admission is $5 ($4 for students and museum members). For information, call (713) 639-7515.

Library workshops: The M.D. Anderson Library invites everyone to begin the summer semester on the right foot with workshops like "Using the Electronic Publications Center for your Research Assignments" and "Using the World Wide Web as a Research Tool," plus library tours, beginning today. Exam time: The Office of Ombudservices reminds students who plan to graduate that the Writing Proficiency Exam will be held Friday, July 18.
