Wednesday's Students' Association Senate meeting had an atmosphere more like a desert island than one of a student government meeting. At the scheduled 7 p.m. meeting time, only six senators sat in the University Center Pacific Room's sea of blue chairs.
The assembly did not make quorum, and the meeting was adjourned after a five-minute announcement period. Quorum is reached when a majority of senators attend a meeting. Without quorum, only roll call and announcements may take place, according to the SA Code.
"I believe the attendance was low due to the fact that it's the first week of school," said SA Director of Public Relations Brenda Johnson. "People are still trying to figure out their schedules. (The attendance might also be) due to the inclement weather."
However, she said she did not feel that the brief meeting caused Senate business to lag, although two pieces of legislation are in committee for consideration.
"I don't think the fact that the meeting didn't make quorum is going to prohibit progress for the summer Senate," Johnson said.
"I do believe the senators need to make a better effort at making the meetings," she added. "A meeting is a meeting."
