Become a foster parent

Last year, more than 90,000 stray cats and dogs were euthanized in the Houston area - but there is an organization dedicated to helping end pet overpopulation in Houston by finding homes for foster cats and dogs.

The Homeless Pet Placement League is a nonprofit group serving the Houston area. Rather than placing stray animals in shelters, the HPPL provides them with "foster homes" in which to live until they can be adopted.

HPPL foster parents provide a home for animals. They are asked to transport animals to adoption sites and may be required to take animals to clinics and ensure that medical treatment, if needed, is given.

The group operates several pet adoption centers, which are open Saturdays, in the Houston area. The adoption fee is $60, including spaying/neutering surgery and the animal's first set of shots.

For information on those sites, or for information on becoming a foster parent, call HPPL at (713) 862-PETS or visit their Web site at www.hppl.org.
