It does a student body good

University of Houston students got an extra smooth and creamy treat yesterday at the University Center's American Cafe. Wiping away white mustaches, students giggled, learned the facts about milk and got their photographs taken.

It was all part of the "Milk, Where's Your Mustache?" Cosmopolitan Milk College Tour. Out of the photos that were taken today, one will be selected to run in a milk mustache ad. The representative will have his or her photo appear in a college newspaper ad and on the Internet.

The real purpose of the tour was to educate college students about milk. "Students need to realize that their bones are still growing and that they need calcium," said Jenna Anding, UH assistant professor and nutritionist. "Students need at least three glasses of milk a day."

Bones continue to grow in density until a person is in his or her mid-30s, according to the national milk promotions board.

A lack of calcium while the bones are developing can cause osteoporosis, a weakening and fracturing of the bones. College students often don't get enough calcium due to their irregular eating habits, the board said.

The tour also tried to get out the message that dieters should switch to skim milk rather than abstaining from milk altogether.
