I can see clearly now ...

Having a little trouble reading this article? Or maybe reading what's on the chalkboard from the back of the class?

If so, you should probably take advantage of the University of Houston optometry department's free vision screening.

Ralph Herring, director of the family practice service and the College of Optometry, said, "The screening is kind of a cursory exam. It measures a few important elements to see if more testing needs to be done."

Herring added, "The screening involves reading the chart and testing for a few general elements such as glaucoma."

From the screening, it can be determined if the person should come back for a full exam.

Herring said, "The vision screenings will be part of the American Optometric Association 'Save Your Vision Week,' which goes on every year in the first week of March."

The examiners will be UH optometry students. Herring said, "Students have it as a required course. The students go out every week to different places to give screenings."

All faculty, staff and students are eligible for the free screening. No appointment is necessary.

This year the screenings will take place across Calhoun at the UH College of Optometry March 4 and 6 from 8:30 a.m. to noon and March 5 from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
