The Student Program Board's Spring Arts and Music Festival kicked off Tuesday in Lynn Eusan Park. The month-long festival will feature events ranging from a Russian festival and a student art exhibition to lunchtime concerts at the Satellite.
All events are free and open to University of Houston faculty, staff, students and their guests.
The following is a schedule of the remaining events, which will continue until the end of April. For more information on any of the events, call the SPB office at (713) 743-5210 or visit the offices in Room 59, University Center Underground.
Wednesday, March 25: First Annual Russian Festival, 5 to 9 p.m., UC Houston Room. This program will introduce guests to various aspects of Russian culture through food, drink, music and dancing. The evening will feature everything from a cosmonaut to folk dancing to musicians, with Russian food samples at no cost. Cash bar.
Wednesday, April 1: "Clandestine" concert, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., UC Satellite patio. Clandestine, a local Scottish band, will bring their music to the lunch hour Satellite crowd.
Friday, April 3: Friday Afternoon Theatre Thing, 2 to 4 p.m., Wortham Theatre Lab. UH theater students will perform a variety of sketches, including monologues and scenes from plays.
UH student art show: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., UC Arbor Level. A display of artwork by UH students.
"Six West" concert: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., UC Satellite patio. A UH ska band will entertain the lunch crowd at the Satellite.
"Julie Plug" concert: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., UC Satellite patio. A free lunch concert by an adult contemporary artist often compared with Jewel and Fiona Apple.
"Greg Howard" concert: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., UC Satellite patio. Howard is one of the few soloists in the world who composes, performs and records on the Chapman Stick. The stick's strings are tapped with both hands rather than plucked, allowing the performer to play bass, the melody line and chords simultaneously. Having released three CDs in the past few years, Howard is emerging as a unique new talent on the music scene, crossing the boundaries of jazz, rock and acoustic music to touch diverse audiences.
Wednesday, April 22: "Gloria Edwards and Tradition" concert, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., UC Satellite patio. Vocalist Edwards teams up with trumpet player Nelson Mills in this original blues band.
