When it comes to soundtracks that feature hip-hop and R&B talent, bigger names usually overshadow efforts by lesser-known artists. Rap tracks also dilute the effect of urban tracks. Caught Up (***1/2 stars out of *****, Noo Trybe/Virgin) is no different.
Snoop Doggy Dogg, Gangstarr and The Luniz triumph over Joe and Shiro. The title track, "Ride On/Caught U," features The Doggfather himself and his fellow Dogg Pound Gangsta, Kurupt. Produced by DJ Quik, this song reaffirms the notion that music with a gangsta twist is here to stay.
Gangstarr continues its reunification effort with "Work," a classic cut. Phat Production (DJ Premier) and smooth flow (Guru) definitely make this one of the best tracks.
The Luniz make two appearances. "My Buddy" is a bangin' collaboration with the Dogg Pound (Daz and Kurupt). The hook, verses, and music are all tight. Yukmouth and Numskull also appear on "Girl," which features newcomer Crooked I. This one works because of its old-school vibe.
Killah Priest, Inspectah Deck and The Gza team up on "Cross Your Heart," an energetic track that states, "We stare you eye to eye/We tell the truth no lie/We cross our heart and hope to die."
Do or Die, Johnny P. and Danny Boy are "All in the Club," while AZ and Jermaine Dupri ask everyone to "Rock Me" backed by an old John Cougar Mellencamp track.
The R&B tracks here are barely worth a mention. Joe serves up "U Should Know Me," and Sumthin' for the People brings "RU Down" to the table. Neither track has any ounce of appeal, and I expected more out of Joe.
All in all, this soundtrack is a winner thanks to the likes of Snoop and The Luniz. Even though there are a few weak links, you can still get Caught Up in this one.
