Right attitude, wrong time

For those who went to graduation last year, you remember. It was empty. The huge stadium wasn't crammed with people. In fact, from the top it was hard to tell there was anyone there at all.

The new administration wants to change all that. They want us all to participate in commencement, and, in order to accomplish that, they have decided to change the day.

"What a good idea!" you think to yourselves. Excellent, even. Except one thing. They decided to change it to Friday morning.

We don't mean to complain ... what are we saying? We do mean to complain. What is that about? What has gotten into their heads that the administration thinks this will help?

We haven't gotten good attendance in the past, but how, pray tell, is this going to help? The reasons they give are weak. They want to get the university community involved.

The logic just isn't there.

The Chancellor/ President wants the general commencement to be before the individual college ceremonies. Why? In a large commuter school like UH, students have a hard time identifying with the university as a whole, and maybe this is what the administration wants to change.

But in a school where the majority of the students are working and in a world where the reality for many is that work is 9 to 5 (even on Fridays), they could have picked a more logical way to encourage university togetherness.
