Four students from the Moores School of Music competed in the Coleman Chamber Music Competition last weekend and brought home top honors.

Andy Wheeler (soprano saxophone), Vicki Dominguez (alto sax), Ryan Agard (tenor sax) and Jason Bird (baritone sax) were one of the 12 groups selected in the final round. Competing against groups from Eastman, Harid, Oberlin, the Manhattan School of Music and other prominent music schools, the catalyst saxophone quartet was awarded the top woodwind/brass prize.

The Coleman Chamber Music Competition is a collegiate/semi-professional chamber music competition. The program listens to hundreds of tapes from around the country before selecting twelve of the best groups at the California Technical Institute.

We Have a Winner!

We have another person to be proud of in the Moores School of Music. Steve Werpy, assistant professor at the MSM, is one of the recipients of the 1998 Enron Teaching Excellence Awards. Werpy was one of three UH professors to earn the honor. Congratulations, professor Werpy!

Also, Miriam Strane was recently recognized for 20 years of service to the University of Houston. Ms. Strane began her career working for both the School of Theatre and the School of Music. She is now the head of the office of Special Projects.

Contemporary Music

The Moores School of Music presents AURA, UH's contemporary music ensemble, in a concert of works by MSM composers.

Under the direction of award-winning composer Chris Theofandis, the ensemble will perform works by David Ashley White, Michael Horvit, Robert Nelson, Rey Ochoa, Hua Yang and Theofandis. Guest artists will include Andrzej Grabiec on violin, David Garrett on cello, Timothy Hester on piano and Woodrow Witt on saxophone.

Admission is $5 ($3 for students and seniors), and tickets are available at the door.
