So you're all done with school, you're ready to start a new job, and the University of Houston has exhausted all of its usefulness, right?
Well, the members of the Young Alumni League, a chartered offshoot of the Houston Alumni Organization, may convince you otherwise.
The group bridges the gap between recent graduates and the high rollers who are strong members of the UH alumni family, strengthening alumni support by catching you young - to be a member, a graduate cannot be older than 30.
Membership comes with the typical prequisites of any alumni group. Socially, members mingle at UH events, such as the latest baseball game against Rice and happy hours at local bars, spending time networking and conversing.
The league also continues the education students received in school, extending education into the realm of the real world. Recent seminars have taught alums how to network, buy a house, interview successfully and invest properly.
According to Nick Brines of the YAL, the social events are quite popular, attended by at least 200 recent graduates, while attendance at the educational functions fluctuates.
"There is a core group that comes to everything," he said.
For more information on the league, seniors may attend a reception welcoming them into the fold Monday at 7 p.m. in the University Hilton. Otherwise, contact Brines at (713) 743-9560 or e-mail him at nbrines@uh.edu for additional information.
