This is in response to Ed de la Garza's column in The Daily Cougar Monday. Mr. De la Garza tried to portray the situation in the Indian sub-continent in an oversimplified way without having knowledge of the existing ground realities.
Each country justified carrying out the nuclear tests based on their own security concerns and not just the Kashmir issue as Mr. de la Garza seems to believe. About the environmental threat from the nuclear weapons: Though we do share his concerns, it must be understood that the biggest nuclear threat comes from the "exclusive" five nuclear weapons states.
The current situation has only thrown light on the hypocrisy in the policies of these five nuclear states, who preach nuclear disarmament and abstinence while continuing to possess most of the world's nuclear weapons and not mentioning any measures towards elimination of their own nuclear arsenal.
