LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Too late, UCS

As a UH alumnus working for an excellent start-up company that is constantly looking for new hires, I have always stressed to the recruiters how excellent the people are at UH. Any time our company needs a new employee, you know I tell them to recruit from UH.

Well, let me explain what brought me to this letter. Our company needed an accounting intern for the summer, along with other possible future full-time employees. So, our company turned the notice over to the University Career Services Center. Sounds good, huh?

Our company waited and waited and waited for any kind response from UH. Nothing. Finally, time came that we had to hire an intern from somewhere else, namely a Baptist university in Waco. The very day that this new intern started, UCS called our company with names of 40 UH students that had turned their information in at the UCS.

When I heard this, I was outraged! And I was ashamed. It was too late for a potentially-hired UH student to get a job at this company. Unbelievable! What is UCS thinking? Why are they waiting so long to respond? Why are they wasting the opportunities of so many UH students looking for a job?

I know that if this happened here, there is no telling how many other opportunities have been wasted by the slow reaction time of UCS.

As a final thought, any UH students looking for a job, do not put all your eggs in one basket (i.e. UCS). Research every source possible. And good luck.

Ms. Mahmoudi could use less fluff

I've just finished reading Scott Harding's letter to the editor regarding Amanda Mahmoudi's column, and although I think he was needlessly harsh, I must admit I agree with the gist of his letter.

I have no interest in attacking Ms. Mahmoudi personally; I'm sure she's a lovely and intelligent person. Nor do I have a problem with her writing style, which seems more than adequate for pursuing a career in writing for The Daily Cougar. What I do have a problem with is the fact that every time I pick up the Cougar and read a column by one of the very, very few female opinion writers for our fine campus paper, I'm confronted by such burning issues as the misery of uncomfortable shoes or the curse of having butt-obsessed friends.

I cringe at the thought of this kind of airhead tripe being an example of what women columnists can do nowadays. I'm not saying that Ms. Mahmoudi should put a feminist agenda in all her columns, or that she should only write about issues of national importance. What I am saying is that even lighthearted columns should reflect at least a glimmer of the writer's intelligence, and I have yet to see that glimmer in any column written by Amanda Mahmoudi.

Criticize and be criticized

I would like to respond to Scott Harding's letter to Amanda Mahmoudi. Scott, you must remember what the good book says: "Let he who can compose a coherent sentence cast the first stone." Wait, maybe that was Confucius! How would I know?! My name is Spanish-sounding so I must be Catholic!

Don't be mad, Scott. I don't mean to be harsh, that's just the way I am! I recommend you purchase a bucket of clues. Oh, yes, and keep well.
