What can we say? We're sorry to see Sybil Todd, vice chancellor for institutional advancement, leave the University of Houston. Todd was, by all accounts (and ours as well) a pleasant woman, who was well-liked among her colleagues.
She came to UH at the request of UH President/UH-System Chancellor Arthur K. Smith only 15 months ago, though, and we certainly hope that this rate of turnover does not become the trend that it has in the past.
Though Todd says she enjoys working with traditional college-age students, we must wonder why she chose to take a $30,000 a year pay cut in order to move to The-Middle-of-Nowhere, Alabama.
Perhaps city life doesn't agree with her, or perhaps she just doesn't like the fact that UH is an urban campus, made up of non-traditional and returning students. It seems curious to us. And, we must admit, her subtle implication that the students in Alabama are smarter hurt our feelings just a little.
When the UH-System merged with the administration of the main campus, the transition was carried out smoothly and with relatively little expense, and we believe that Dr. Todd was an integral part of that.
Filling both a UH and a UH-System position, she helped set an example for future administrators.
As one colleague of Todd said, "We're happy that she's found a position working with students, but what can I say? We're ticked that she's leaving."
Whatever Todd's personal reason for leaving, we, along with the rest of the university, will miss her promoting UH in institutional advancement.
