University of Houston-System Chancellor/UH President Arthur K. Smith and Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk will get to experience student life firsthand Tuesday. The UH Student Foundation is sponsoring the "Big Switch" program, allowing two students to trade places with the administrators for a day.
Spencer Lightsy, senior political science major, will become UH president for a day, while sophomore business major Stephen Brown will trade places with Gladchuk. The participating students were chosen through a raffle. About 400 tickets were purchased at $1 each.
The event will give the two students an opportunity to meet with top administrators and to see the inner workings of the UH administration, while Gladchuk and Smith will have a chance to experience administrative policy in action.
"This will be good publicity for the university," said Nick Brines, UH alumnus and adviser of the UH Student Foundation.
The day will begin early for the "students," with a meeting at 8 a.m. and breakfast shortly thereafter, in the University Center for Smith and for Gladchuk at the UC Satellite.
Gladchuk will attend Political Science 1336, during which Professor Greg Roof has said Gladchuk will be expected to participate in a discussion of the politics of the break-up of the Southwest Conference.
Smith will attend Professor Christopher Wlezien's Political Science 3318 class at 10 a.m., after which he will go to an academic advising appointment.
Meanwhile Gladchuk will have a tour of residence halls.
Their day will end with a 12:15 p.m. lunch for both the students and the administrators.
The Student Foundation is comprised of 39 upperclass students who work with alumni to publicize UH and form a connection between students and alumni.
