Get out and run in your briefs for UH Law Center Saturday

Students, faculty and staff who have been feeling the urge to run in their briefs lately need look no further than this weekend when the University of Houston Law Center hosts the annual "Running in Your Briefs" 5 Kilometer fun run on Saturday.

The 3.1 mile run/walk, which benefits the Murray Nusynowitz scholarship fund and the Public Interest Law scholarship fund, has a new name and, race organizers hope, a broader appeal.

"We came up with the title because it'd be an interesting double entendre," said Sam Francis, a Student Bar Association representative.

Race organizers hope to attract around 250 entrants and have expanded the race to focus not just on the UH law community, but on the Houston running community at large.

Francis said this year's race has more sponsors and better publicity. Sponsors include Smoothie King, Office Depot, RunSport, the Kolache Factory and Irma's restaurant.

The starting gun is set to go off at 8 a.m. The course encircles the UH campus and will begin and end at the Law Center, at Calhoun and Entrance 19.

Each runner gets a T-shirt, race bib and a bag of assorted sports goodies and coupons. More treats will be raffled off, such as lunch for two at Moose Cafe and one night's stay for two at the Houston Plaza Hilton.

Runners' times at each mile will be called out. Awards will go to the top male and female finishers and to the top three finishers in each age division.

The after-race party will feature plenty of free food, an awards presentation and raffles.

The race entry fee is $18 through Feb. 19 and $20 on race day. Packet pickup will be Thursday, Feb. 19 between 2 and 7 p.m. at the UH Student Bar Association Office or at Memorial Park on Friday, Feb. 20 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Race entrants can sign up and pick up packets at 7 a.m. on race day.

Those using mail to sign up should send registration forms to the UH Law Center at the following address:
