TeNo, astrologer for local radio station 97.9 KBXX, spoke to a crowd of about 30 people Thursday in the Cougar Den. Her subject? Everybody's favorite: love.
More specifically, native Houstonian TeNo (pronounced "tuh-know") was invited by the Excel Program and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. to discuss "Dating in the 20th Century" from an astrological perspective.
She explained the validity of astrology and how it related to the subject of dating. "Many times, in today's society, we make relationships so much more difficult than they have to be," she said.
"I have learned that astrology can teach us a lot not only about ourselves, but other people ... I feel the main purpose of astrology is to help you understand yourself."
TeNo dispelled some of the audience members' notions like predestination and conflicts between religion and astrology. She said she believes that astrology exposes characteristics of one's life, not their reason for being. She added that she believes God created everything and knew what he was doing, and that everything is connected.
"I went in thinking the only way this stuff is going to come true is if you want it to, but she explained herself well," said freshman business major Jamaal Ellis. "She made a good point about God and everything being connected."
Senior accounting and management major Allison Morgan said she felt much the same. "(TeNo) was as accurate as the people on the Internet Website," Morgan said. "I was expecting her to just blow my mind - tell me what my dog's name was ... (but) she basically reinforces what people already believe."
Mostly, TeNo did reinforce people's ideas. She affirmed that love relationships are the hardest for us to master and that the millions of books written on the subject do not help.
For example, she said both men and women are endowed with intuition, but many times neither sex pays attention to it.
"I personally feel that astrology can do so much more than books can," TeNo said, adding that different people have different needs and that astrology teaches how to love people the way they need to be loved.
