UH drops two straight
in C-USA; UConn's streak still intact
Jesse Lauritz
The UH women's basketball team had a tough weekend as they lost to two top Conference USA teams. The Lady Cougars were defeated by DePaul Friday, 78-54, as Lenae Williams scored 31 points and broke DePaul's single-season school record for three-point field goals by converting 6 of 11 attempts behind the arc.
Jessica Shanklin (5), shown here against Saint Louis, scored nine points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in UH's 68-36 loss to Marquette last Sunday. Kathy Williams scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars. Jessica Shanklin also added nine points, while Cathy Lida and Kokeesha Randle each put in seven points. Randle added four rebounds and assists as well. C-USA leader Marquette pounded UH, 66-38, in a game Sunday in which the Lady Cougars were outmatched in every category. Jessica Shanklin led UH with nine points and a career-high eight rebounds, but the Lady Cougars couldn't pull it together. Randle and Lida contributed five points apiece to the valiant effort. Lida pulled down six rebounds and had three steals and two assists in the lowest-scoring game this season for UH. The Lady Cougars converted only 3 of 29 shots in the second half and were simply out-rebounded on the offensive glass as well as on the defensive end. The Lady Cougars are now 6-13 overall and 3-6 in C-USA action. UH's next game will be at home against Alabama-Birmingham on Friday at 7 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion. The Streak The Lady Huskies of Connecticut remained at the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press women's basketball poll for the 13th straight week. This is the longest stretch UConn has ever been on top of the poll; it previously held the No. 1 spot for 12 weeks in the 1996-97 campaign. The Huskies were the unanimous choice for the fourth consecutive week. The rest of the top five also remained unchanged, with Louisiana Tech in second, Georgia third, Tennessee fourth and Notre Dame in fifth place. UConn had a scare early last week, beating Boston College by the slim margin of 84-77. It was their toughest and closest game of the season. Penn State moved up one place to sixth and LSU jumped five spots to reach their highest position since 1984 at seventh place. Stanford was the only team that exited the poll, and Kansas re-appeared after a one-week absence. Kansas returned to the poll after convincing victories over Iowa State
and Missouri. UCLA fell five spots to No. 15 in the biggest drop of the
week.
