Miss Black and Gold contestants ‘true stars'

The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity gave students the opportunity to show off their style and sophistication at the 17th Annual Miss Black and Gold Pageant on Sunday night.

Hundreds of students, decked out in their finest apparel, filled the University Hilton's Grand Ballroom to watch as nine ladies competed for the title.

Sophomore accounting major Chalon Clark was this year's winner. In addition to a $1,000 scholarship, Clark took home roses, trophies, a television and a video camera.

"The purpose of the pageant is to exemplify our women in a different light and to showcase their talents," said pageant Chairman and senior finance major Rodney Hughes.

"I hope Miss Black and Gold would represent a stellar example of what young people should try to be: intelligent, of high moral character and able to help others," Hughes said.

The mistress and master of ceremonies were Channel 11 news reporter Angie Martinez and Alpha Phi Alpha President Ndubuisi Nwaokelemeh.

"These ladies have spent countless hours of time and preparation for this eventful and memorable occasion," Nwaokelemeh said. "They are truly stars."

Entertainment for the night included singing by Delta Sigma Theta sorority members Leslie and Vicki Washington, a speech by Ebony Washington and jazz music from UH alumnus Rodney Glover and his band.

Runners-up for the title were communication sophomores Shelbi Pullen and Chariesse Simpson.

Guests seemed impressed with the event.

"The pageant had a very (good) turnout from the UH community and support from the families," said fraternity member and MIS junior Tory Carmon. "The input from the contestants was remarkable, and without them none of this would have been possible."

"I thought it was a lovely affair," campus activities adviser and pageant judge Latasha Wilson said. "Each year it gets nicer."
