UH Sabbath reaches out to local churches

The new "image campaign" isn't the University's only concerted attempt at marketing itself. Later this month, UH will call upon a higher power for help during UH Sabbath.

"UH Sabbath is an opportunity for the University to connect with the local people who are its lifeblood," explained John Boll, president of the Campus Ministries Association.

UH Sabbath, which will be held Feb. 25 through 27, consists of University representatives giving brief announcements at local churches to inform members of some of the services UH has to offer.

Representatives will also distribute informational brochures about such services to church members.

"UH Sabbath gives the University the chance to promote its educational and community resources, such as the College of Optometry and their full-service clinic that is open to the public," said Scott Sherrill, UH marketing manager.

Some of the other resources that will be marketed to the community include summer programs for children, career services, distance education and financial aid, he said.

Last year, UH Sabbath worked with 12 area churches, and this year, organizers hope to reach more. Sherrill said the marketing office is working with Campus Ministries and the president's office to identify churches to participate in the program.

UH Sabbath is still seeking student, faculty and staff volunteers to act as representatives at local churches for the weekend. To volunteer, contact Sherrill at (713) 743-0771 or sasherrill@central.uh.edu or volunteer online at www.uh.edu/marketing/volunteer/main.htm.

"Volunteers are more than welcome to speak as a UH Sabbath representative at their own church," Sherrill said.

Even those who don't volunteer can recommend their own churches for inclusion in the program. To recommend a church, send Sherrill the church's name and the name of its religious leader.
