UH enjoys increase in private donation |
Student insurance
deadline is near
By C. Joy Chafin
Friday is the final day for students to sign up for UH health insurance, which is offered at a competitive rate through the University Health Center. Although many students feel they are healthy, said Health Center Chief Nurse Pamella Hoffmeister, not carrying health insurance is a risk. Doctors and nurses at the Health Center attend to unpredicted medical problems every day, from broken bones to lacerations. Students spend thousands of dollars every year on unforeseen medical problems, and in most cases health insurance would have decreased the medical bills. Student insurance begins at $298 for a full semester's coverage and requires a $5 co-pay per visit to the Health Center. The Health Center, whose 44 staff members see about 100 students per day, offers a variety of services to students, from vaccinations to dermatology to gynecological exams. The center also has an on-site pharmacy. Staff Physician James Gray said the center's goal is to care for students. He said the Health Center staff tries to educate students on illness prevention, which both he and Hoffmeister said is preferable to treatment after the fact.
