Lady Coogs drop
two conference games; USM guard Atterbery is POW
Women's Hoops Jesse Lauritz The Lady Cougars lost a pair of Conference USA games this past weekend, bringing their current losing skid to six games. On Saturday, UH lost to Southern Mississippi 78-67. The Lady Tigers' victory was sweet revenge as UH beat them in January. The Lady Cougars' Jessica Shanklin had career highs in four different categories. She had 19 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals. ShaRonda Lasseter added 15 points and Norma Noel with 12. On Thursday, UH fell to No. 25 Tulane 83-53. Against the Lady Green Wave, the Lady Cougars were led by Lasseter with her 17 points, while Cathy Lida had 12 and Noel added 11 points. The Lady Cougars will next face C-USA rival Cincinnati on Friday at home in Hofheinz Pavilion. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. UH will later travel to Louisville on Sunday to face the Lady Cardinals. C-USA Player of the Week Angela Atterberry of Southern Mississippi was named C-USA Player of the Week while averaging 23 points, four rebounds, and two steals last week. She scored 21 points in the 72-55 win over South Florida and bettered that performance with 25 points in the victory against the Lady Cougars. She also had seven three pointers in those two games combined. Atterberry has now scored 20 or more points in six of her last seven outings. No one likes change Connecticut once again held the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press women's basketball poll for the 15th straight week, while the other five spots behind them also remained the same as last week. Marquette debuted in the poll for the first time this year at No. 23 after winning 11 of their last 12 contests and clinched the Conference USA American Division championship with their win at Louisville. Tulane went from No. 25 to No. 20 for the biggest jump in the poll after
big wins over Houston and South Florida.
