Former Cougar backfield
coach Redd dead at 71
Cougar Sports Services Former UH football backfield coach Elmer Redd, died Friday, Feb. 11 in Lufkin. A Tyler native born in 1928, he retired from UH in November 1986 after 17 seasons with the Cougars. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at New Zion Baptist Church. He is survived by daughters, Dr. Ellen G. Redd Melton of Tyler, Marilyn D. Redd and Carolyn D. Redd of Houston. Under the guidance of legendary UH football coach Bill Yeoman, Redd helped lead the Cougars to a 115-76-4 record during his tenure on the UH coaching staff (1970-86). The Cougars were ranked nationally as high as No. 4 while Redd was on
staff. UH played in the Bluebonnet Bowl three times, the Cotton Bowl four
times, the Garden State Bowl once and the Sun Bowl once during Redd's tenure,
with a record of 4-5 in bowl games.
