Houston Assembly of Delphian Chapters celebrates 75 years By Sarah B. Lawrence
The Houston Assembly of the Delphian Chapters, an organization that has supported UH since the days before it was a full-fledged university, will celebrate its 75th anniversary Saturday with a gala dinner and auction. The Houston Assembly gave its first scholarship to UH in 1930, when the school was still known as Houston Junior College, said Brigid Earthman of the Delphian Chapter. The Delphians began as a group to encourage young women to enter and finish college. "It was a three-year program, and they were provided with hardbound books for study," Earthman said."The discussions were based on general knowledge things, such as history, art, architecture and literature." The Houston Delphian chapter has raised more than $800,000, which has been used for women's scholarships and departmental gifts at UH, since the chapter's inception, Earthman said. The anniversary celebration will feature music from the Russell Jackson Orchestra as well as a silent auction to raise funds for future scholarships. Items to be auctioned include airline tickets, UH sports memorabilia, gift certificates for local restaurants and weekend getaways. The event will also feature a wine auction, to which any guest may contribute a bottle. The evening's honoree will be Max Castillo, president of UH-Downtown.
The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeside Country Club, 100 Wilcrest
Drive. For more information, call (713) 773-4380.
