Lady Cougars fall
to Cincinnatti at Hofheinz, Louisville on road
Cougar Sports Services The UH women's basketball team dropped two games over the weekend, one at home and one on the road. UH's first loss came Friday night at the hands of Cincinnatti at Hofheinz Pavilion in front of a season-high crowd of 2,805.
For the first time in 12 games, the UH women's basketball team split its weekend games, traveling to Louisville for one and playing host to Cincinnatti (shown here) on Friday. A late turnover by the Lady Cougars would prove fatal as UH fell 66-64 in the final minutes. The Lady Cougars led by three, 44-41, at the break, thanks in large part to the tandem of Jessica Shanklin and Angela Curl, who finished with 17 and 11 points, respectively.
UH would later widen the gap to nine early on in the second half, but the Bearcats returned the favor with a 13-2 run to take a 54-52 lead. The Lady Cougars battled back to take a one-point lead in the game's final minute, but UC's Madinah Slaise stole the ball from UH's Kokeesha Randle, scored a bucket and was fouled to finalize the score, 66-64. Slaise led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-28 shooting while teammate Candice Holley provided a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards. ShaRonda Lasseter led the Lady Cougars in rebounding with 10, and UH shot .469 from the field. But the thorn in UH's side all night was at the charity stripe, where the team shot only .435 (10-of-23) from the line.
UH continued its split-weekend on the road Sunday at Louisville to face the Lady Cardinals and fell by a 68-54 margin. UH is now 6-19 overall and 3-11 in Conference USA action. Up next for the Lady Cougars is the team's home finale, a non-conference showdown with the University of Texas-Pan American on Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. After that, UH will travel to South Florida to wrap up the regular season
in Tampa versus the Lady Bulls. Then it's back to Louisville for the C-USA
Tournament, held March 3-6.
