UH drops seventh-straight
By Josh Gajewski
Scoring machine B.B. Waldon dropped in 19 points and two other players reached double-digits as South Florida (16-9, 7-5) won its first conference road game of the season at the hands of UH, 81-74. The Cougars (8-17, 2-10), winless in their last seven games, dropped their 12th game in 14 tries despite five players reaching double-figures.
UH's Roy Spears (5) was one of five Cougars to reach double-digit scoring in Saturday's loss to South Florida. Spears chipped in 11 on 4-of-10 shooting. UH rolled through the middle of the first half and actually led by seven with 5:17 remaining after a couple of Marcus Oliver (12 points) free throws, but USF narrowed the margin to only two just before the buzzer sounded. The Bulls' game plan of making UH's Gee Gervin worked, as he was held to only four points on 2-of-5 shooting in the first half. "They were very aware of where I was on the court," Gervin said. "They kept the big bodies on me all day and you have to give them credit for playing great defense." UH's shooting plummeted in the second half. The Cougars shot a little more than 65 percent from the field in the first half, but that mark fell to less than 30 percent in the second. "We came out flat," UH head coach Clyde Drexler said. "They picked it up defensively, and we fell down." USF stormed out of the gate after intermission and took its biggest lead of the game with 11:32 to play after Altron Jackson sank a free throw to give the Bulls a 61-49 edge. UH would then run off the next 15 points of the game to take a 64-61 lead with 6:10 remaining, but the advance would be short-lived. The Bulls outscored UH 20-10 the rest of the way and once again, the Cougars' inability to put two good halves of basketball together doomed Drexler and Co. George Williams, Kenny Younger, Roy Spears, Marcus Oliver and Gervin each finished with more than 10 points, while Younger also added 12 boards. UH's next attempt to end its current skid will come Wednesday night
at Hofheinz Pavilion, when the Cougars will try for their second win of
the season against Memphis.
